Some artists, designers and architects that were part of the Cubist movement in Prague at the beginning of the 20th century. The painters Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta and Antonín Procházka; the sculptor Otto Gutfreund; the architects and designers Pavel Janák, Josef Gočár, Vlastislav Hofman, Emil Králíček and Josef Chochol.
"Promenade in the Rieger Gardens," Bohumil Kubišta, 1907.
Kubišta (1884-1918) was a Czech painter and art critic, and is known as the founder of modern art in Czech culture.
He initially was very influenced by van Gogh and Cezanne, but later was blown away by an exhibit of Edward Munch and founded a group called Osma (The Eight) that explored Expressionism. After 1910 he began to explore Cubism and became much more modernist.
He was also a perceptive art critic who exhaustively studied optics, color theory, philosophy, geometry, mathematics, and other parts of the scientific side of art.
He joined the army in 1913 and passed away in 1918 from the raging flu pandemic that year.
From the National Gallery in Prague.
"Landscape with Mount Fuji in the Distance," Emil Orlik, 1908.
Czech-born painter Orlik (1870-1932) isn't well known, having worked a lot as an illustrator and lithographer, but he deserves a closer look.
He was one of few Western artists who wasn't content to simply admire the Japanese prints that were popular in Europe, but to actually go to Japan and undertake an apprenticeship in traditional woodblock printing.
This landscape, done with Western sensibilities and with Japanese technique, has almost intense use of color and sense of composition. I want a print.
From a private collection.
