#NewstalkZB, NZ’s leading RW news broadcasters told its listeners not to take meteorological warnings about the approaching Cyclone Gabrielle too seriously.
#CycloneGabrielle in Feb 23 was the costliest tropical cyclone on record in the Southern Hemisphere, with total damage estimated to be NZ$14.5 billion, in which NZ$3.18 billion are insurance loss.

Hilarious to hear Nicola Willis trying to take #NZPol credit for the seasonal price drop of kumara, potato and onions. Kumara, potato and onion costs had gone through the roof as a result of crops being written off in the previous 2 years due to recent weather events such as Auckland and Northland flooding plus #CycloneGabrielle

Meanwhile, New Zealanders will also feel the effects of warming seas, with the ocean dictating much of the island nation’s weather, said Dr Georgia Grant, a climate scientist at GNS Science.

“Increasing ocean temperatures are one of the factors as to why storms like #CycloneGabrielle are expected to increase in severity under climate warming.”

New Zealand’s sea temperatures hit record highs, outstripping global averages

Experts say the new figures dispel the notion that the country is protected from extreme temperatures and raise fears for local marine life

"This increased the burden on remaining staff. In the event, the urgent need for specialist skills in the first hours of the response perhaps outweighed infection risk."

Intriguing, some people still maintain that *nothing* outweighs the risk of COVID infection.

Great article by Cindy Baxter:

Climate change is relentless: without action it’s only going to get worse, and the bills will continue to mount. Piha resident Cindy Baxter wants to know when we’re going to face our long-term problems head on.

Reading the stories and being reminded of what it was like on the day and days afterwards, and what it felt like learning about those who had lost so much kinda brings it all back.

We had it good, others had and still have it terrible. I feel for them a bunch, and I bet other folks whose personal experience was as relatively easy as mine probably do too.

It's been a cruddy time for folks, and my fear is that we'll see more of this in future.

I tell youse what.

We had it easy when Gabrielle hit, no power or comms for a day and water only came under 1/4 of our house. We had food, clean water, couldn't flush the dunny but because we live near the storm/sewage pumping pit there was a generator there towards the end of the day tidying all that up.

At the time we kinda felt ok, mostly because we had no communications so had no idea how bad things were. That didn't start hitting until days afterwards.

The climate change-charged Cyclone Gabrielle was devastating, but one year on, Luxon's Government seems intent on increasing the risk of more storms like this by rolling back efforts to limit climate change.

Cyclone Gabrielle anniversary - one year on, there is both despair and hope - Greenpeace Aotearoa

One year ago this week, Cyclone Gabrielle hit Northland and began tracking down the country, causing widespread damage and killing 11 people.

"What I’m most struck by is how many people still need help with the silt, 10 months after the storm. ... Conspicuously absent from his list is any national or local government authority or major charity. I hear the same thing over and over again from residents of Pakowhai and Omahu and Esk Valley: the only people they could find to help were volunteers. “Without them,” one told me, “we’d still be knee-deep in mud.”

After Gabrielle, volunteers are salvaging homes and lives

Twelve months on from Cyclone Gabrielle, many people are still fighting to return home. On February 14, 2023, floodwaters filled their houses with mud and destroyed possessions, memories, and livelihoods. Survivors were left virtually on their own to tackle the massive clean-up job—until a network of volunteers began digging out houses and supporting them through the trauma, forging unexpected connections along the way.
