Traditional firewalls allow or block traffic to specific ports, but open ports are visible to port scans and vulnerable. Port knocking hides all ports by keeping them closed until a specific sequence of connection attempts to certain ports is received, then it opens the port for that IP.

Since this one from Classless Inter-Domain Routing: IPv4 CIDR blocks – Wikipedia is much better, I copied it in full then colourised it using the above scheme and added the mask octet and binary mask columns, then added the “(max hosts)” to the “Decimal” columns:
