Yet, when we sit down to write our critiques, we veil them in the language of “objectivity,” dinging other journalists for failing to exemplify a virtue we have never seen and do not possess. Objectivity is Santa Claus. It’s the Easter Bunny. It’s a patently fake thing we all pretend to believe in, because we don’t want the public to know who’s footing the bill.

Sometimes, you run across a little factoid that punctures that. Sometimes, you learn that Ian Katz of the Guardian, BBC’s Newsnight and Channel 4, was married to Justine Roberts, the founder of Mumsnet, for twenty-five years.
