Was always against these gimmicky “coding courses” in schools, thinking that mathematics, and the standard curriculum, was a better base for <insert future technological skills> than something as specific as coding.

AI has already proven this to be true.

It also calls into question any focus on vocational goals at primary school level over and above the goal of refining the human mind and building character.

UNESCO Guidelines for Generative AI: Practical Applications for Schools

Following Digital Learning Week in Paris, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization published a comprehensive document containing guidelines for Generative AI (GAI) in education and research, and exploring the implications for policy. The guidelines are linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through Goal 4: ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, and reflect the "Education 2030" agenda of the […]

VINE Generative Artificial Intelligence Guidelines for Schools

At the VINE Teaching with Technology day, hosted at Camberwell Grammar School, we had the pleasure of launching the VINE Generative AI Guidelines to member schools. The guidelines have been distributed as an open access document to VINE members and non-members, and are available on the VINE website here. During the session, we held an “AI round table” with some very rich discussions about what these technologies mean for the future of education. Artificial Intelligence in the Australian Curriculum

Earlier this year I had the privilege of providing some "critical friend" feedback during the development of ACARA's Artificial Intelligence Curriculum Connection. In this post, I'll explore some of the updates and where they overlap with the Australian Curriculum v9, as well as provided a (ChatGPT powered) TL;DR: of the content. Last week, the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools was published. As a starting point, it offers some high level core principles for bringing GenAI […]

Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools: A good start, but much more to be done

The final version of the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools has been published, offering six core principles and twenty-five guiding statements for schools seeking to use generative AI. But will it help? Since February 2023, Australian Education Ministers have been working on a Framework for GenAI in consultation with unions, teachers, students, industry, academics, sector organisations and school communities to determine a national approach to the use of generative AI in […]

Video: Understanding the Australian Framework for GenAI in Schools

The article introduces the Australian Framework for GenAI in Schools, aiming to clarify its purpose and scope. It emphasizes the need for professional development and ethical incorporation of AI into K-12 education, as well as resources aligned with the Framework. The included video provides a brief overview and invites further engagement with the topic.

Teaching Writing in the Age of AI

With Victoria the latest state to ban ChatGPT, teachers everywhere are grappling with the implications of the large language model and the impact it will have on the classroom. We know that banning and blocking technology is - at best - a temporary solution. Students will find ways around the blocks, and teachers will be faced with policing the technology and its use. Aside from the "cheating narrative", many teachers are also very hopeful of how the technology could be integrated into their […]

Design Refine Create: A Framework for GenAI Curriculum Design

For the past few weeks, I've been exploring ways that educators can take back control of generative artificial intelligence. As part of curriculum design, I started with reflections on how I use multimodal generative AI myself when designing my blogs on education and resources. Then, I took a brief side step into EdTech application design to experiment with ways educators can build their own AI assistants. Last week, I finished up with a critique of both edtech lesson planning and education […]

Racist, Robotic, and Random: More Thoughts on Generative AI Grading

There has been a surge in discussions on using generative AI for assessment and grading, sparking polarised views on its potential biases and impacts. Research and personal experiments have revealed concerns about AI's capability and fairness in grading, particularly in regards to racial bias. The black box nature of AI poses challenges, and while it offers efficiency, it may not accommodate diverse student needs.
