This is seriously cool. Walk into a virtual Criterion Closet and pick your own favourite DVDs from their collection. (Criterion produce DVDs and run a series on YouTube where film well known film people get to choose their favourite films from a real-life closet of DVDs.). From a sheer programming point-of-view, it is stunning but the overall execution is a masterpiece.

Elijah Wood’s Closet Picks

A delightful visit by Elijah to the closet. I still have not seen On the Water Front, but Brandow kinda puts me off sometimes. But I need to see Bottle Rocket. I started Wes Anderson with Rushmore. So I need to go back.

Hairspray, already the world’s most perfect movie, finally gets the Criterion treatment with this deluxe 4K+Blu-Ray restoration. Among the many extras is “Two Up and Two Back,” a 40-minute interview from earlier this year between me, Gaylord Fields, and the Pope of Trash himself—John Waters! We take a deep dive into the soundtrack and JW’s musical penchant for all things rockin’, weird and unsung. https://www.criterion.com/films/34791-hairspray #criterion
The Complete Kubrick

A titan of cinema whose influence extends across visual art, philosophy, politics, technology, fashion, and beyond, Stanley Kubrick created an unprecedented string of masterpieces, from Paths of Glory to Dr. Strangelove to 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. Bending disparate genres to his will, he imbued his creations with a cuttingly ironic worldview and an iconographic, mesmerizingly precise visual style, probing the anxieties, enigmas, and horrors of the twentieth century with a coolly devastating eye. Tracing his evolution from independent maverick to Hollywood rebel to visionary transnational auteur whose every film from the mid-1960s on became a manifesto of a radically new sensibility, The Complete Kubrick brings together the entirety of a body of work that opened popular cinema up to new realms of moral profundity and metaphysical mystery.

Collected here for the first time are Kubrick’s thirteen features and three shorts, all restored in 4K, with their original soundtracks alongside the 5.1 mixes, restored and remastered; over twenty-five hours of interviews, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes materials; and deluxe packaging illustrated with rare photographs, artwork, and documents annotated by Kubrick himself, all housed in a singular box inspired by the director’s legendary archive.

@thetonearm Before my dad passed away in 2011, I'd look at photos taken of him, and would consider that the latest photo taken of him as an old man, was the "real" him.

Once he passed away, I had an epiphany that my dad, in fact, existed equally in all of the photos taken of him.

He transcended time.

I think the Eno documentary treats Enos career in a similar way. The editing allows Eno's entire career to speak with equal importance.

@thetonearm We watched the documentary with Eno and its really well done.

This may be difficult to express, but a documentary usually follows a person's career as a linear progression.

Here, all parts of Eno's life is expressed equally. Slipping forward and back following a discussion. The result is that Eno exists equally in all points of his life. Fascinating.

I'd like to think we all deserve to view our own lives that way.

I'll continue this thread...
