Ecumenopolis: The Art Of Urbanizing A Planet

This fascinating video by Dami Lee goes into some of the painful details of what it would take actually to urbanize an entire planet.

She does this by examining two Ecumenopolises (city planets) in science fiction: Trantor from The Foundation & Coruscant from Star Wars.

What was interesting about this video was not only the explanation of the potential hazards & difficulties of urbanizing an entire planet, but also the revelation on how much of Earth is urbanized—& the extent was very surprising.

Interestingly, Dami Lee projected how many people could live on planet Earth if all available land were urbanized at a reasonable density.

Complete urbanization of the entire surface area is unlikely (and not wise), as people need green spaces for psychological reasons and farms for biological ones, so a better diagram was displayed.

Overall,, a planet with a trillion people would probably not be welcomed by the masses. However a planet hosting a couple of hundred billion people would (in theory) be feasible & potentially sustainable (but probably not enjoyable).

It was a fun video to watch, & I enjoyed Dami Lee explaining a potentially crowded future through two fictional worlds that serve as (albeit horrifying) examples.

A company I bought shoes from last year offered to send me shoes if I wore and reviewed them, and they arrived today in a Saturday surprise. I had NO idea what they'd look like. Viendo que se ha anunciado #starwarszerocompany me hizo recordar que años atrás para una campaña de rol de #starwarssagaedition (juego de rol del universo de #starwars con el sistema #D20 de #DnD) escribí la historia de mi personaje y se trataba de un joven aristócrata de #Coruscant que en la sumatoria de perseguir un sueño + mala suerte + un par de malas decisiones termina en una situación que lo hace comenzar a llevar una vida de contrabandista.

Años después estallan las #GuerrasClon y mi personaje sabiendo que #LaRepública iba a priorizar ciertos planetas y sistemas, se anota como voluntario en las guerras para así ayudar a los planetas y sistemas olvidados, los que iban a detrás atrás.

Muchas de sus misiones fueron de guerrilla, sabotaje, espionaje, romper bloqueos, técnicamente facilitarle la cosa a los #clontroopers, los «verdaderos héroes de la guerra». Ver que ahora sale un juego con una premisa o concepto similar al trasfondo de mi personaje me hace pensar que mi visión sobre Star Wars y sus acontecimientos no estaba tan loca como a veces muchas personas lo hacían ver.

Porque sí todos esos héroes #AhsokaTano, #CapitánRex, #ComandanteCody, #AnakinSkywalker, entre otros. Todo giraba en torno a elles y eran les protagonistas, pero yo siempre dije «No fueron los únicos que estuvieron ahí».
