Claus WilckeIn praise of the Copy | When one copies #rembrandt one discovers, that even in rough Sketches (like here) the Maestro was utilizing three grades of shadows: soft ones, made by hatching, medium ones with watered bister and very dark ones, with direct applied bister. ( Didn' t know before what "Bister" is but it turns out to be Rembrandts preferred sketching ink)

In praise of the copy: Rembrandt, 1635, " the naughty child". What really stands out here is the speed. The scene will be over in less than a second. The small child’s shoe is still in mid-air. And the two shadows embrace and frame the image, lending it a solidity within which this lightning-fast scene unfolds.

In praise of the #copying: this #sketch from #rembrandt seems to be no big News. But they horizon of the picture, i.e. our viewpoint is the height of the saint eyes and Just the beniing the feet of the small Jesus-Child. We look up, too.

In praise of the copying: the daily Rembrandt-Copy, although only 10-15 minutes long Always reveals something you haven't seen before. Here it is the shadow in the left bottom who washes Out hirizontally and thereby establishing a floor and foreground for the two personas in the center.
