What if there were an auction and escrow site where people and orgs could jointly bid on #nonfree content to become relicensed under a #copyfree, #copyleft or #publicdomain license? And creators could cache out when they think the bid is high enough?
I'm mainly thinking of documentaries, where for instance #Arte, #BBC, together with private, crowdfunding donors could come to an agreement who pays how much. Instead of this current habit of #depublicating works after some months or so. 1/2
@mjg59 on the other hand #hostapd or #ath9k / #ath10k / #ath11k / #ath12k / #mt76 /... in the wireless ecosystem are huge projects and use #copyfree licenses like #BSD or #ISC. Where the goal is to allow creating forks for commercial, closed-source products with extra, wifi related features. This motive and use-case for #copyfree is what I see more as a threat to #copyleft than using #copyfree in a new coreutils suite.
@mjg59 so for me, there are valid use-cases both for #copyfree / MIT / *BSD licenses or #copleft / #GPL. And especially a "Nobody is going to try to make money on a proprietary fork of an MIT Coreutils" would be a valid, plausible reason for me to choose a #copyfree license. Without thinking it would undermine the mission of #copyleft / #GPL.
@mjg59 my take on #copyleft vs. #copyfree is: I use the former for "serious", bigger projects. And use the latter, likely even #CC0, for small scripts, tools or projects. Which often more have an educational purpose, where I'm happy if people copy some lines or the whole thing, with no obligations. I don't want people to need to upgrade to copyleft or drag my name for just copying a few lines from those.
Copyleft / GPL is what I prefer for things that I had been working on for several days.

5000 symbols limit? On pleroma?

What should I do to exceed that limit? Are you crazy?

Anyway.

Hello everybody, my name is Andrew Nitrogenesis. I'm a solo developer from Finland. Making stuff, posting shit, and making good-ass sandwiches.

I'm making my stuff in C++, and have strong principles about it. I prefer #copyfree licenses over #copyleft, highly do not recommend GNU software and hate #Stallman.

I *do not* call Linux "GNU/Linux", I *do not* use GNU software on daily basis anymore, and I have my reasons for that.

Currently daily-driving #FreeBSD and making my own OS based on it, with all the desktop components made from scratch.
