The first day of summer – and the national flower of Finland: the lily of the valley. Beautiful, fragrant, and very poisonous. Just like Finns? Ummm...

Anyway, I went to the woods today to photograph them. Sunlight filtered through the canopy and created some interesting patterns in some of the photos, such as this one.

From a week or so ago, Lily of the valley, Convallaria majalis, in the stumpery. They are very reliable flowering at the right time of the year, the beginning of May.
In Austria (and probably other German speaking countries) they are called Maiglöckchen, little May bells.

@DoomsdaysCW Another idea: In my area wild garlic (#alliumursinum, super tasty) grows first. The lily of the valley (#convallariamajalis, very poisonous) joins in later. The leaves are quite similar. To avoid confusing wild garlic leaves with the ones of the #lilyofthevalley, one can plant two or three lilys of the valley in an ideal spot in the garden (with a rhizome barrier, though!). As soon as the first leaf tips appear there, take extra care when collecting #wildgarlic.

Genus Convallaria, lilies of the valley. I'm unsure whether this is the American or European species
