The concept of #ContainerTabs in #Firefox and derivatives (like #Librefox and #Waterfox) is very useful, but it needs to be better implemented to be seamlessly useful.

edit 2026-03-26: actually, after some discussion in the comments, i have been using this extension for quite some time after all and it's become essential for me

edit 2025-10-08: i cannot vouch for the extension i linked and no longer recommend it. when i extract it and look at its background.js, there's a lot of stuff that i can't explain and i am not comfortable with. sigh... but it seems like a good concept.

one of the things that concerns me about private windows / incognito windows is that you only get one session at a time. this is a downgrade from the isolation that firefox-based browsers offer you with container tabs, especially if you have a tracker-licious website open alongside something else in your private session.

Temporary Containers Plus is an interesting idea - with Automatic Mode, you get a new container per tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/temporary-containers-plus

Temporary Containers Plus – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)

Download Temporary Containers Plus for Firefox. Open tabs, websites, and links in automatically managed disposable containers. Containers isolate the data websites store (cookies, cache, and more) from each other, further enhancing your privacy while you browse.

what exactly is the privacy benefit of container tabs?

I repeat, privacy benefit!

Gosh, wish Firefox provided the full functionality of their Container tabs add-on within the browser itself! 😐

Have to install an extension just for one feature 🙃

The feature is *Opening certain links in a container tab always/by default."

#ContainerTabs

@anaxamaxan No, i respectfully disagree. I see heaps of peeps allege this, but it's not correct. The use-case of #Firefox #ContainerTabs [which ARE wunnerful; no argument from me] is different to that for separate Profiles. Here's just some of the important things #Profiles in FF allow, but CT do not:

- separate #bookmarks
- separate cookie management policies
- separate `about:preferences`
- separate `about:config`
- separate #AddOns

et al [Telemetry, Service Workers, yada yada].

Both features are extremely useful, but with respect, in only the very narrowest sense do their #VennDiagrams overlap.

And now there’s #ContainerTabs which works great too!

Damn! I thought the inbuilt Firefox for Linux distros come with the Container Tabs add-on inbuilt! 😐
It did for Linux Mint, but not in Fedora! 🤔

@dogjaw @moonman It's called p0rn mode tabs (or #containerTabs if you use #Firefox)
Sören berichtet von der Entwicklung der #ContainerTabs. Endlich multiple Identitäten im selben Browser. \o/ https://is.gd/nl8Jb4
