Satire
Avoidance of the real depth of near tragedy is found in parts of comedy ie in Carry on up The Kyber where the British elite carry on exactly as normal by having dinner as the place is being destroyed. Or In episodes of Ripping Yarns where the obvious is mocked by being avoided in polite conversations.
So this ‘top down’ attitude can be as absurdly funny as it is now deeply serious. Ironic that the mockery dramas were portrayed ‘in the colonys’ whereas now it is our sad old, bad old home islands that face direct assaults from an unstoppable natural consequence of ourselves!
That re-frame might be a useful way to widen the eyes of soft denialism that sometimes sit back complacently in the notion that nature will simply swing back to the world what was in yester-years, like a well regulated pendulum.
I spoke to a near neighbour in the street yesterday who had received but so far, not read, the emails I sent about the NEB & COBRA rampaging elephant herds our media still avoid noticing.
She accepted that this is all important but not as immediate in their minds as flying to New Zealand soon to see their new grandchild!
Neither she nor her husband are British, so they haven’t got that ‘British disease’ culture as an excuse!
I didn’t address the carbon guilt that she expressed, instead I made a point of saying that one thing we all will very soon have to face is rebooting our life expectations into a very new and never before done in human history (globally) mode!
