“Reading the Board: The Atari BBS Written in BASIC”
This month dives deep into the actual code behind Atari BBS systems like AMIS, FoReM, Carina, and NiteLite — from modem answer routines and ATASCII handling to message bases, file transfers.
Still amazing to me that these systems, written largely in BASIC, even better still online today!
ATASCII Lives.

Guy types in Rats, a 3-D maze “game” from 1983. Interestingly, he said it was originally made for a #PET 4000 series, which is kind of hard to believe as the graphics were only character-based, I thought.

This is the cover of the oldest issue of Compute! magazine that I remember owning.
What I appreciated most about this magazine was that it covered the different systems of the era, enough for me to appreciate the other systems too. Unlike the magazines that specialized in one system, the diversity in scope gave me a wider perspective of what the early home computers were capable of, as well as showcase strengths of each platform.
