At first I was all starry-eyed about how progressive Tomodachi life looked and shit, but now after a few days of playing it I have more nuanced opinions.

And when I say nuanced opinions, I mean I am pissed.

Even though the game gives the player the opportunity to create non-binary characters who are panromantic or even aromantic, the pronouns choices are still binary (except in english) and the game remains heteronormative.

For instance, polyamory is not an option. When a Mii has a crush on a second person, they ask the player to choose one. I tried setting up a love triangle but Miis can only crush on a single person at once!

Furthermore, a romantic relationship that grows seems to always evolve into marriage. Do I need to tell you how much I fucking hate marriage?

At first, when I saw the "non-binary" option at the Mii creator, I thought "at last! I am finally represented! I can't believe it!". But, no, actually I am not. If I can't love my lovers, I am not represented AT ALL.

Managed to meet the March deadline of the #CAHRA2025 #CompHet #CryoEM challenge and submit something!

I only had time to do a very quick pass, but am very much looking forward to some feedback because it is an interesting dataset with several challenging aspects.

Currently reading a yuri #manga called Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl about two college students dating. It involved gender confusion as the hook; the "handsome" girl is a little tomboyish and Sheltered Girl perceives [her] as a man and wants to date "him". Tomboy isn't opposed on principle but realizes Sheltered Girl think's she's a he. Tomboy doesn't "out" herself but struggles to find a "right time" that of course keeps getting thwarted for the sake of comedy. #CompHet is a thing so it could also be Tomboy's lesbian awakening, too, because in her inner monologue she keeps protesting "but we're both GIRLS!" yet doesn't seem to mind dating Sheltered Girl. Sheltered girl is too head over heels in love to question Tomboy's gender, hijinks ensue.

My first impression is that the heterogeneity isn't going to be the biggest challenge. I'm already pulling my hair over symmetry and anisotropy problems. πŸ™ƒ

Pretty excited about this "2025 Community-Wide Assessment of Cryo-EM Heterogeneous Reconstruction Algorithms" #CAHRA2025
https://heterogeneity.notion.site/challenge

I started looking at the compositional heterogeneity challenge (#CompHet), some very weird things in there. Curious to figure out what this is. Can't wait to get maps good enough for identification with ModelAngelo.

Are you also doing it @waldo ? πŸ˜€

Compcomphet #blog entry by The B+ Squad with clear takedown of #comphet from a #bisexual angle https://www.patreon.com/posts/compcomphet-125602024

I'm seeing a lot of discussion around comphet (compulsory heterosexuality), which is amazing, but a LOT of it is straying into biphobia and that's fucking disappointing.

Do better.
