Music and relationship

Geoff Baker is a musician and academic specialising in the music of Latin America, with a particular focus on education, community music and questions of social impact. He has just published Musicking in a relational key: music education and community music for a time of metacrisis, which, in his words, 

Questions the dominant model of “social action through music,” exemplified by Venezuela’s El Sistema, and proposes alternatives centred on relationality: the idea that human flourishing depends on our connections with one another and with the wider web of life.

Although Geoff has a different approach to mine, his work resonates, so I’m eager to read this latest instalment. And we have a common commitment to making our work freely available: Musicking in a relational can be read online or as a PDF. Even though I’ve not read it yet, I recommend it without a moment’s hesitation.

Hills Symphony Orchestra are playing an exciting concert on the afternoon of Sunday 14th June. It's our first ever World Premiere! The Baritone Saxophone Concerto has never been performed before. It is a gorgeous, melodious expression of joy. You will love it. The concert also features Beethoven's 3rd Symphony ('Erioca').
