Is it useful or necessary? No. But did I enjoy making an RGBi cable, getting 80 column mode going on my C128 and then creating a functional DS/DD CP/M boot disk for the 1571? Yeah.
Will I do much with it? Probably not… but seeing it work is always satisfying. In truth, it might prove useful when I start restoring these Kaypro II machines since I see I can format floppies for them on the 1571… but I also want to dive into #greaseweazle for those.
If someone has a line on a sanely priced, good looking Commodore 128 chassis or a non-working machine in good cosmetic shape, please let me know (US). The one I have works great, but the case is not in great shape and can't be easily restored.
Of course a working machine in nice cosmetic shape is also great if the price is good... but based on eBay prices, seems overkill for my needs.
After 38.5 years I've finally found out, what the "HELP" command of the C128 BASIC is for: in case of an error it displays the line of the program where the error occurred AND UNDERLINES THE RESPECTIVE TOKENS (at least in 80 column mode). 🤯
