Coal mining communities gather to mark Davis Day
Davis Day, or Miners Memorial Day, has been a Nova Scotian tradition for the past 70 years to commemorate the death of coal miner William Davis and every miner who lost their life below ground. The CBC's Luke Ettinger was at Springhill's memorial event this year.

A vigil commemorating the lives of Columbus Blue Jackets hockey winger Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau was held outside Nationwide Arena Wednesday night.

On Aug.29, the brothers “were killed on the eve of their sister’s wedding when they were hit by a suspected drunken driver while riding bicycles in their home state of New Jersey,” according to an Aug. 30 article from the Associated Press. 

The Columbus Blue Jackets invited fans to come celebrate the brothers’ lives. Several of Johnny Gaudreau’s teammates — including Cole Sillinger, Elvis Merzļikins and Erik Gudbranson — also attended.

#otd 79 years ago, #Auschwitz was #liberated. On this occasion, we #commemorate the victims of #NaziPersecution with the #InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay.

In the concentration camp #BergenBelsen, the Nazis tried to erase the traces of their crimes by destroying the camp’s documentation. Of the more than 110,000 prisoners, at least 52,000 died. The names and fates of many of these prisoners are still unknown today.
