Robert Hay, previously of the Victoria Hotel at Tapley's Hill, established the inn the following year. Hay died on 20 January 1862, after which the hotel passed through many hands. Opposite the old horse changing station, it was a natural stop for coaches heading south and a gathering place for locals.
