The Seven Stages of Climate Grief

Actually confronting the reality of climate catastrophe can look a lot like the 7 stages of grief. Let's discuss the 7 stages of climate grief.

“We are, and always will be, responsible for each other, and have to learn to live with the consequences of each others' actions. It's a silly libertarian fantasy to pretend otherwise.”

In which I pit Julian Leeser against Hannah Arendt

Abolishing collaboration?! Can we discuss that?

On practising "soft skills" for a hard future Opposition education spokesperson, Julian Leeser, has apparently decided that the most important issue to weigh into on tertiary education right now is abolishing group assignments.* Funnily enough, I actually went to uni with Julian, at UNSW law school way back last century.

"What is #collapsology and what role does a “collapsologist” play?" ~bodhi-paul-chefurka

"Economic problems are generally framed in terms of increasing debt loads and widening income disparity.

Structural problems include the rise of authoritarian governments, and various issues related to complexity. Joseph Tainter has written an excellent short book on the collapse of complex societies in which he speculates that collapse might result from the diminishing marginal return or utility of solutions to increasingly complex problems."

"What is #collapsology and what role does a “collapsologist” play?" ~bodhi-paul-chefurka

"“Collapsology” isn’t a formal field of scientific study. Instead, it’s a way of describing the open-source research of individuals who are concerned that society or civilization may collapse at some point, possibly in the near future, due to the convergence of various internal and external pressures. These pressures include environmental, ecological, economic and structural problems, among others.

Chief among the environmental problems is climate change, closely followed by ocean acidification. The main way in which climate change could cause social collapse is believed to be food supply issues caused by extreme weather events such as droughts and floods."

Will be part of a discussion panel on global crises and doom scenarios at Tec Art, Rotterdam, today (Saturday), 20.30

"Society has a curious tendency to fixate on annoying daily struggles, while the dread of larger, more urgent crises fades into the background noise of our lives. How else can we explain why, even in the face of extreme crises, nothing seems to actually change? Is it because Doomsday simply isn’t as bad as Monday?"

with Süeda Isik, Florian Cramer, Sophia Bulgakova, Ronald Hünneman, Cecile van Bruggen (moderator), at Katoenhuis Rotterdam, Keilestraat 9c, 3029 BP Rotterdam, 20.30-21.45, 29th March 2025

Actually I am reading an older article by Pablo Servigne and Raphaël Stevens about #collapsology
The most reason I think, we don't have a clue, how to change our economy to one that serves people not money.

""Dealing with large-scale threats demands considerable societal cohesion." As an example, he cites the Covid pandemic. Societies that showed higher levels of cohesion and the capacity for collective action before Covid broke out navigated the pandemic more effectively and successfully implemented the necessary distancing measures."

Why do some environmental shocks lead to disaster while others don't?

It's no longer just about stopping, but how we can live with climate change. To figure this out, we must delve into our cultures. A new study points out how our history could help guide the way.
