A Letter from Cole Wehrle

Eight years ago I walked through the doors of a converted warehouse on the edge of Saint Paul and made my way through a back staircase to the still unfinished second floor. I wandered around a bit before I got to a set of doors with a single sheet of paper taped to the door with the words “Leder Games” printed on it.

Today I'm going to teach(!) and play #MollyHouse

The game is set in the queer community of London in the 1730s.

It's a strange animal, but it's so good at capturing the vibe of an hedonistic community under life threatening pressure.

The rules aren't overly complicated, but the devil is in the detail, as they say. And I'm the only player who had played it before. So I'm on my own 🥵 wish me luck. My husband is in and he thinks I'm a horrible game explainer. I'm stressed out already 😂

I'm looking to get at a point where I don't spend 80% of my cognitive resources on understanding and observing the rules and get to the strategic part.

Jahrhunderts (Mollies).

❤️

#ColeWehrle on motivation to create:

»I try to find urgency in every game I work on. [It's my central] design practice. I don’t design games because I think it’s fun or interesting (though it often is). Ultimately, I work on games that feel urgent. I want a project to feel like it needs to exist and that we are the only team that is able to make it. If a game doesn’t feel urgent, or […] I’m not the right person to work on game, then I will almost certainly abandon it.«

Designer Diary 7 – The Product Split | Arcs

Next week, we’ll be launching the Kickstarter for Arcs. I’ve got a few more designer diaries I’d like to write, but I probably won’t be publishing them before or during the Kickstarter. There are only so many hours in the day! But, before the launch, I

#ColeWehrle is talking about game design, but I feel this applies to other artistic endeavors as well:

»If you’re a designer […], know that often it’s best to shoot very high and then start fresh than to preemptively clip your wings for fear of a development liability. Never get too precious with one articulation of your ideas. The core promise and ambition of a game is always more valuable than whatever you happen to have on your table. Never be afraid to start over.«

Developer Diary 3 - Reaping what You Sow | Oath: New Foundations

Here is the first part of two-part development diary that is long overdue. Be warned, I’m going to really get into the weeds of New Foundation’s development and try to describe what we’ve been tangling with. This post is going to get pretty detailed and most

Arcs Blight Reach, solo 3 handed

So anyone who followed me elsewhere knows that I have some big problems with Arcs as a game, but there's still something that is really interesting buried at the core of it that I can't get over. This is like x5 true of the campaign game, which does this intriguing endogenous table versioning via its different fates, varied starting points from last game, and dynamics between them. It's quite an interesting design space and it makes Arcs the "can't quit you" game that I keep poking at despite being repulsed by a lot of other elements about the game that don't fit with my gaming sensibilities or that I genuinely think are bad design and development aspects. I ran a solo 3 hander because I enjoy playing with the texture of the different developing different board situations. While Arcs isn't like great this way, weirdly it doesn't play that badly since the game is so insanely chaotic and tactical that you can't really make long term planning decisions very well even if you knew the other player's cards.

In this game, Partisan, Caretaker, and Founder created a tableau that was quite different than other campaign games I've either played in earnest or soloed---there was no incumbent empire fate that was looking to supercharge the empire, so while the partisan took a little of that role, it led to a board state with few incentives to keep the empire besides some convenience... and Founder immediately wants to bail and gut the empire as best as they can. The game definitely exposed the part of the fates system that a friend has detailed several times; a lot of the tenor, though not the specifics, of the game is set before and between games by the fate choice. This sets it in complete contrast with Wehrle's other design, Oath, which I consider a true masterpiece in this space that does a lot of what this game is doing but a lot better.
