#Colesworths have enticed me into shopping weekly, rather than every 6-8 weeks ($50 and $40 offers respectively), so I'm uniquely placed to observe shopping centre carpark utilisation rates, as impacted by the current fuel crisis. 🤪

Compared to my previous visits, the carpark had 'noticeably more' empty spots than usual, but inside the shops there were no expanses of empty shelves (yet), nor any brawls in the toilet paper aisles.

Coles, one half of Australia's Colesworths supermarket duopoly, is under a bit of scrutiny right now for gouging customers, suppliers, and workers.

A year ago, the chain hired Peter Thiel's Palantir to cut costs and snoop on workers: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02-09/coles-just-hired-us-defence-contractor-palantir/103443504

They're also reportedly rolling out more cameras to track customers.

And without mentioning the division Coles set up to sell customer data as an advertising product.

No, really.

See for yourself: https://www.coles.com.au/coles360

With competition watchdog the ACCC now asking questions, there's really two options for Coles:

1) Stop being such massive pricks
2) Hire a former editor of The Australian, who was also Malcolm Turnbull's head of staff, as a corporate spin doctor.

Guess what Coles chose to do?

"Supermarket giant Coles has tapped the high-profile communications adviser Clive Mathieson to lead the company’s corporate affairs operation, as the retailer stares down the consumer regulator over concerns about its pricing practices.
...
"He will arrive at the company in the thick of heightened regulatory and public scrutiny of the sector, and was given the nod because of his experience. In media, that has included a stint as editor of The Australian, before time in state and federal politics, which included a run as chief-of-staff to former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull."

Known for their work with the CIA, tech company Palantir is coming to Coles

Coles plans to deploy data company Palantir's tools across more than 840 supermarkets to cut costs and "redefine how we think about our workforce". At a time of increased food insecurity, Australians should question if this is the right direction, writes Luke Munn.

Why can't Australian supermarkets harness AI in their advertising?

If I was crafting emails and app notifications and personalised offers for me, I would look through my purchase history, and go "This bloke has never bought anything pet-related, so he probably doesn't have a pet, so how about we never send him any pet-specific offers or specials…🤔"

instead of their current mindset of
"This bloke hasn't bought anything pet-related yet, so we're missing out on his dollars in that segment, so we need to absolutely saturate his feed with pet-related specials and offers until he starts spending his dollars on our pet products!"

Then, when they grasp the concept, they can apply it to my targetted ads for baby goods, alcohol, and parent-related marketing.

Recently, I've been trying to find ways to avoid the Colesworths supermarket duopoly as much as possible.

I'm pulling together a cheat sheet of alternatives. If you have any suggestions you can recommend, please leave them as a comment.

Some will be more expensive (IGA and Foodworks), but others (like grocery clearance stores and Aldi) less so. Hopefully it balances out.

It's also important to note there's likely to be far more alternatives if you're in Melbourne or Sydney than a remote or rural area.

The starting point is to stop thinking in terms of a one-stop shop.

Even if you're in a very Colesworth dependent town, even shifting some of your grocery shopping to a local bakery or green grocer is a win.

The starting point: Shopping local. If there's a local bakery, green grocer, deli, butcher, etc., then support them.

A good tip on this front is discount chemists often stock toiletries and household cleaning products at prices comparable to Colesworths.

If it's available: Grocery clearance stores (even if it's just once a week).

Next: Is there a farmers market in your area?
* https://farmersmarkets.org.au/find-a-market/

If not, there's some services offering direct produce from farmers:
* https://farmerspick.com.au/
* Happy to hear more recommendations

The obvious one is Aldi, although it doesn't stock everything.

And then IGA or Foodworks. It is more expensive, but it's more of a backfill for things you can't get elsewhere.

Even if there's no local IGA in your area, many stores offer free delivery for orders over $100: https://www.igashop.com.au/delivery

For our babies, we're tending to bulk order from Pet Circle. It works out cheaper often, even with delivery fees: https://www.petcircle.com.au/

If you're vegan in Sydney, The Cruelty Free Shop (formerly in Glebe, now moving to the CBD) is great but pricey, and there's a few others around the country: https://australia.veganonthemap.com/vegan/shops

Any other suggestions or things I've missed?

The #Woolworths #Rewards app is insatiable!

It's now up to nearly 13,000 tracking attempts! And look at the next highest number, from a cycling app which was running for about 3 hours.

So, it has come to this.

Desperately browsing the #ColesWorths web sites for the cheapest acceptable ground #coffee, and discussing buying a grinder. (But some beans are more expensive than their pre-ground version. WTF?)

We're even holding our noses and trying #Aldi coffee again. We mix it with our preferred brand to make it palatable.

Prices are all over the graph as the supermarkets try to find a new price point.
