Someone read my post on the NCB Rawdon coal mine check: https://coinofnote.com/n-c-b-rawdon-check-uk/
They asked if I could find any info on Denis Cook who was a foreman there. Do any of my followers happen to have any contacts who might have any info I can pass on please?

Today is #ANZAC day, the 25th April. On this day, 111 years ago, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli. A relatively minor (and disastrous) campaign for British forces, but the first big battle Australia & New Zealand were involved in as nations. As such, it is a somberly commemorated event each year.
Lest we forget.
While I haven't written up a coin confirmed to be related to the battle, I do have a 1902-10 penny turned into "art". Possibly trench art? Possibly just done by someone before or after the war, but either way, still an interesting piece: https://coinofnote.com/1902-10-uk-penny-art/

It's nearly time for the #Newsletter, which means it's time to get your #MysteryCoin guesses in if you haven't already!
I do like coins which are interesting shapes, and while "square" (or "square with rounded corners") may not be the most interesting geometric shape normally, it is a more interesting shape when you look at coins as there aren't quite so many (there have only been 22 common circulating coins which are some form of square in the last 50 years) - but if you know this king and emperor, you'll know this particular coin wasn't one of them...
So... we can read WHO he is.... but where is this coin from and when?

I saw this coin advertised by a dealer today. Inspired by the French silent film "A Trip to the Moon" from 1902. The film is a pioneering 15-minute silent science fiction film directed by Georges Méliès. The film is online, here is a copy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNAHcMMOHE8

Today is the feast of Saint George. Patron Saint of England. Born in Lydda in 270 AD, he joined the Roman army & became a personal guard of Emperor Diocletian, who sent him on a mission to Britain. Through George, Empress Helena converted to Christianity, & through her, her son Constantine the Great.
Diocletian in the meantime, decreed that Christianity be destroyed. George originally stayed at Lydda to encourage the faithful, but ultimately decided to return to see Diocletian to intercede for Christians, and was ultimately put to death for his faith.

Famously presented on UK Sovereigns, here is, instead, a coloured medallion of the saint in the famous scene slaying the dragon (which was, in reality, possibly a large lizard such as a Komodo dragon, rather than a genuine fire-breathing beast, or maybe it's just an allegory for good defeating evil?).

Today is the first anniversary of the passing of Pope Francis. In contrast to Queen Elizabeth II (who was born 100 years ago today), who was the most depicted person on coinage, there has only been one common circulating coin featuring the likeness of Pope Francis, and I wrote a piece on it shortly after his passing last year: https://coinofnote.com/2014-vatican-50-cents/

Happy 100th anniversary of birth to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty would have been 100 today.
In honour of the occasion, here are four images, three gold-coloured (not actual gold) coins, and some art:
1) The 1st portrait by Mary Gillick, from an Australian pre-decimal penny: https://coinofnote.com/1963-australian-penny-keyring/
2) The Arnold Machin portrait on the first circulating pound coin: https://coinofnote.com/1979-isle-of-man-pound/
3) Jody Clark portrait with memorial dates, on 2023 Sydney Opera House 50c: https://coinofnote.com/2023-sydney-opera-house-50th-anniversary/
4) Two composite images together - left: A picture I made, of coins with each of the portraits overlaid on a larger image of a penny with the Mary Gillick portrait. Right: A picture I bought of the Queen's portrait made up of stamps of her image.

I do like seeing groups of coins on a theme. This week's E-Sylum has an article on Wrestlers on ancient coins - hat a great topic: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n16.html#article25

Hello #SaturdayNightCoinShow!
Here is a well loved, somewhat grubby, 1983 UK Penny. To be honest, I can't remember why it is on my desk, but since it is, I'm sharing it with you.
This coin was only issued from 1982 - 1984. Up until 1981 the design was the same except reading "NEW PENNY" rather than "ONE PENNY" (from 1971 when decimal currency was introduced). In 1985, a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was introduced.
The reverse features a crowned portcullis with chains (an adaptation of the Badge of Henry VII which is now the Badge of the Palace of Westminster),
What is on your desk at the moment? Share it with the #SaturdayNightCoinShow hashtag and let us see your random #coin!
