I recently viewed A Way To Die: The Films of John Balance and Peter Christopherson. It’s a wonderful peek into their lives but your enjoyment depends on your views regarding the continuous mining of their archive joyzine.org/2026/05/16/f... #coil @[email protected]

Drew McDowall works with sound as a long-form process. Using modular synthesis, tape, and acoustic sources, he builds pieces that move slowly and hold their shape. The focus stays on duration, texture, and the internal shifts that happen over time.

A former member of Coil, his solo work continues along a personal line—drawing in elements like pipe organ and traditional forms such as pibroch, not as references but as material. The compositions remain minimal in gesture but dense in presence, with tension carried through sustained tones rather than dramatic change.

Recent work, including In A Thread, Silvered and Trembling, reflects this approach. Sound is stretched, layered, and allowed to settle into its own pace.

Support: Sonja Tofik

Sonja Tofik works with drones, feedback, field recordings, and voice. Her music develops through small, continuous shifts, with attention to space and resonance.

Following releases on Moloton and Northern Electronics, and work created for Ina GRM, she continues to refine a practice centered on sustained sound and controlled instability. In performance, the focus is steady and tactile, with sound treated as a physical presence.

A night built on duration, detail, and careful listening.

Concert included in the SS26 season pass.
