Thanks to Debian's newly founded DFSG team, cockpit-files finally made it out of the NEW queue and is now available in Debian unstable and Ubuntu's development series! 🎉

Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 LTS backports are uploaded and await review. Debian 13 backport will be uploaded in a few days after the package enters testing.

Enjoy a file browser in Cockpit!

Soooo remember my talk at FOSDEM 2026 about Cockpit and passwordless login?. I put up a timeline there which was very optimistic - which kinda fell apart unsurprisingly.

We didn't get the WebAuthn flow accepted into pam-u2f, which makes sense in hindsight given how much more complication it adds to maintain and for little benefit of the majority of users of pam-u2f. In short, checking Relying Party (RP), verifying data, complexities with URL domain, origin, hostname, and RP, and also in general of it being quite a bit different of an auth flow for pam-u2f.

What this all means for what we have to do is that we now have to deploy our own PAM module for WebAuthn. Initial thoughts is just to fork pam-u2f and modify it greatly. They already have done most of the hard work so might as well make use of it. Just need to change the verification flow, config handling (maybe we use systemd JSON User Records), and hopefully more security hardening features like being able to track the passkey counter.

Recovering from last Sunday's data deletion oopsie, I've now rebuilt my homelab using Fedora Server, rootless Podman, and ZFS mirrors, all secured with a Tailscale mesh.

Accidentally deleting all my containers catapulted me forward with learning Cockpit and Podman, both of which I’ve become quite familiar in a short amount of time. Failure is a great teacher.
