VOI isn't a concrete metric that's going to impress non-marketing executives who only understand spreadsheets, but it's an invaluable concept that every experienced marketer should instinctively understand.

It also aligns with one of my favorite #Cluetrain quotes: "Some of these conversations ended in a sale, but don’t let that fool you. The sale was merely the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence."

ROI vs. VOI: Smart Marketers Look Beyond the Numbers - SparkToro

Most of us default to Return on Investment (ROI) for measuring marketing success. It's the tried-and-true metric that quantifies financial returns. Money

"I’d rather preserve my independence, but keeping a roof over my head is more important." @baldur

If blogging IS tied to your professional work, it's arguably even more important to get your house in order now. I always appreciate Baldur's candor, and his personal asides bolster his professional credibility.

He's the anti-Godin, and he proves the internet can be a better place.

How it once was

We shared the things we enjoyed in our own space, not on a service, which is now using that sharing against us.

Personal Digital Sovereignty

The other day, I wrote that “One of the reasons I write in my blog is for the pleasure of being able to say ‘I told you so’”. More seriously, I want somewhere to exist on the net where people can find my personal record. I don’t expect this blog ever to achieve mass readership; it’s a snapshot of the contents of my own brain, and that is a niche interest.

Flashback: We can have a different web

We can have a different web

Many yearn for the “good old days” of the web. We could have those good old days back — or something even better — and if anything, it would be easier now than it ever was.

Why keep blogging in 2025?

If you've known me for a while, you know a #Cluetrain quote is coming!

EDIT: I've added posts from others about their own blogging to this thread. 👇🏽

As in guillotine...

Just finished reading “Obedient Poodles for God and Country” by Chris Locke in #cluetrain book.

It is a rant. Should have been a para.

I used to make similar observations about the #singularity - e.g. that no one had explained how the computers would build things, & it kind of couldn't happen without that.

The unspoken assumption was the INEVITABILITY of total automation of everything, under the full robotic control of singularity mind(s). Thinking about how that would happen was regarded as at best spoiling the fun - but more usually, was taken to indicate one had missed the #cluetrain.

The Cluetrain Manifesto is 25 years old and this is still standard behaviour from companies. Why the fuck would you send an email from "noreply" and then right there in the email give an email address that can take replies?

And no, Electrolux, I will not be paying for the faulty parts you replaced. The fan in a fan forced oven is not a consumable. But hey, I can't reply so I'll await your call chasing payment eh?

In which White uses "walled gardens" to give an updated spin on #Cluetrain's "markets are conversations," reminding us that the web can be ours again — if we really want it.
