After heat records were smashed and a torrent of extreme weather events rocked countless countries in 2023, some climate scientists believed that the waning of the El Nino weather pattern could mean 2024 would be slightly cooler.

The dry conditions have also made New Jersey's forests highly susceptible to fire. More than 11,000 acres have burned this year, with firefighters continuing to battle the massive Jennings Creek Wildfire in West Milford, which has burned nearly 4,400 acres across New Jersey and New York. Officials warned that violations of fire and water restrictions could result in fines or criminal charges.

Just out of morbid curiosity, I used a cool gadget I have to take outdoor CO2 readings after our indoor reading scared me. (We opened some windows). The outdoor reading stabilized at 634 ppm. That is probably about 125% higher than pre-industrial levels in my region of Ontario. I checked the forest fire situation : none within several hundred miles. It's summer, so little furnace use in homes. This is bad, people.
