I found a stretch just east of the Appalachians as the best area, from north GA to ~Staunton, VA.

@LA61 In Canada the situation is even worse. Granted the population is small relative to long distances but, practically speaking, there are no passenger trains anymore except the around the triangle of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and one very expensive trans-Canada route.
