After the chardet bullshit, I'm seeing a rising trickle of use of the term "clean room re-implementation" referring to "AI" slop output from a prompt to rewrite some open-source code.

It ain't a clean room rewrite; that has a very specific meaning.

We need a new term for this kind of LLM-enabled license-washing. Suggestions?

⚠️ If you were thinking about supporting this router, watch the video.

The maker used Claude to do a "clean room" reimplantation of Linux drivers to FreeBSD.

Not just the use of AI is concerning but also trivializing license issues.

Why genAI means the end of copyright for software and the re-invention of open source

Most of the discussions about the impact of the latest generative AI systems on copyright have centred on text, images and video. That’s no surprise, since writers, artists and film-makers feel very strongly about their creations, and members of the public can relate easily to the issues that AI raises for this kind of creativity. But there’s another creative domain that has been massively […]

"AI" LLM-based licensewashing of LGPL code ... by the project maintainer.

What the hell is wrong with these folks? Token go in, brain fall out.

Getting a program to "rewrite" your code doesn't nullify the copyright ownership or license terms of everything that went before it. You need a clean-room reimplementation from a bare spec for that, and LLMs *by definition* can't do that.
