March 2, 1955 - Nine months before Rosa Parks made headlines, teenager Claudette Colvin was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person. She was active in the Youth Council of the local NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People).

Though the Montgomery Bus Boycott was begun after Ms. Parks’s arrest, Clovin’s legal case became part of the basis for a federal court challenge to Alabama’s segregation laws. Colvin became one of four plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, in which the Supreme Court ultimately struck down the law under which she was arrested for merely taking her set on a bus

15-year-old #ClaudetteColvin refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, AL, bus on #ThisDayInHistory in 1955, nine months before #RosaParks did it. The judge dropped two of the charges, busting her only for 'assault' during her arrest so an appeal could not affect #segregation.

"On March 2, 1955, she was returning home from school when she boarded a Highland Gardens bus and sat down near an emergency exit in a middle row."

Claudette Colvin, US civil rights pioneer arrested for not giving up bus seat, dies aged 86

Colvin refused to give up seat to white woman in Alabama in 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks’ act of defiance

The Guardian

"Whenever people ask me 'Why didn't you get up when the bus driver asked you?' I say it felt as though Harriet Tubman's hands were pushing me down on one shoulder and Sojourner Truth's hands were pushing me down on the other shoulder. I felt inspired by these women because my teacher taught us about them in so much detail."
