#Citipati, or dancing skeletons, in a Tibetan Thangka painting. Citipati is a protector deity or supernatural being in #Tibetan and #Vajrayana #Buddhism of #India. It is formed of two skeletal deities, one male and the other female, both dancing wildly with their limbs intertwined inside a halo of flames representing change. They are invoked as ‘wrathful deities’, benevolent protectors or fierce beings of demonic appearance.

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax & published by Columbia University Press) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. "A stand against the sand" shows a male Citipati protecting a nest from an approaching sandstorm.

In #Tibetan #Buddhism, the #Citipati, or 'Lords of the Cemetery# are two #mythological #Buddhist ascetics, who were so deep in their meditation, they were caught unawares by a thief and beheaded even before they knew they were dead. As a symbol, the Citipati represent the eternal dance of death, and perfect awareness. They are usually depicted as a male/female pair of intertwined skeletons caught up in an ecstatic dance.
