For those who celebrate Christmas, here’s one of our favorite poems of the season: “Advent” by Ann Ellerton.

We cherish the memories of it being recited by our daughter (the child in our profile photo bicycle trailer). And still smile on remembering the movements of her little hands as she lived out, in her imagination, this winter wildlife scene.

God gave us all a garden once, and walked with us at eve
That we might know Him face to face with no need to believe.
But we denied and hid from Him concealing our own shame,
Yet still, He came to look for us and call us each by name.

Artificial Christmas tree,
My, you are so tinselly,
Full of fairy lights and balls,
Like a festive shopping mall.

In your branches, clamped and wired,
Sit dead robins, now expired,
Festooned in the usual way,
Upon Granny’s birthing day.

Make the most of these few weeks,
Stretch your limbs and wear your treats,
Soon you will be folded, boxed,
Stripped and put back in the loft.
