Good Morning, News: Oregon DOJ Goes After Planned ICE Facility, the Incomplete Epstein Files, and Girl. Nicki Minaj Needs HELP
Attorneys with the Oregon Department of Justice are asking a federal judge to slam the brakes on Trump's plan to construct an ICE gulag immigrant detention center in the community of Newport, Oregon. As you may recall, the feds have been quietly scouting around for employees to run their impromptu jail, so they can use the local airport to fly hundreds of kidnapped detainees out of the country, most likely using planes they've purchased themselves. Oregon lawyers are accusing the Trump administration of violating the law by planning the detention center without going through the proper channels-because of course they haven't. "Téllez was on his way to drop his kids at school in north Portland when he was pulled out of his car by federal agents. "The arrest drew dozens of neighbors into the streets to record the arrest and push back against immigration authorities. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news. Last Friday, Multnomah County released its annual Domicile Unknown report, which counts the number of #houseless people who died this year-and while it's less than 2024 (by 18 percent), 372 Multnomah County neighbors still perished on the streets in 2025. And that's too much. by 372. Worse still, those deaths were preventable, and our Jeremiah Hayden has the story on how we got here and where we need to be. In related news, experts are calling Portland's affordable housing program "a business model that's failing," citing frustratingly long wait times for those wanting to get into units, and a surplus of empty "affordable" apartments that are far too expensive, deemed uninhabitable, or too costly for landlords to run. The O's Jonathan Bach does a deep dive into why this is the case, and what can be done about it. . Staff members on the TriMet Safety Response Team-which acts as an unarmed security force designed to deescalate tense situations on trains and busses rather than calling in the police-have announced their intention to form a worker's union. Since they aren't technically TriMet employees-they were hired by the city-contracted private security company, Portland Patrol, Inc.-they don't have the same sort of protections as other TriMet employees, and are fighting back against what they claim is a hostile work environment, unfair compensation, and less than adequate support from their bosses. Our Taylor Griggs explains more in this fascinating story. Conceived last year by Dying Wish as a remedy for how often bands skip hometown shows when on tour, the second year of their holiday rager was even bigger and more brutal. While we can expect some rain this week-as opposed to the flooding experienced from last week's uninvited deluge-no major storms have been predicted for the immediate future. However, last week's floods have caused major damage across the state, including flooded homes next to the Clackamas River just outside of Portland, and landslides in Oregon City which led to the evacuation of families. It's time for the POP QUIZ PDX-this week featuring the top questions of 2025! How much do YOU remember about Portland's robot dogs, Blazer scandals, and that time Kristi "ICE Barbie" Noem came (uninvited) to town? . PLUS! Your vote for the most heroic hero of 2025! In another example of why it's important to support news organizations you can trust: CBS news-now under the helm of craven Trump minion Bari Weiss-abruptly yoinked a planned segment from last night's episode of 60 Minutes about immigrant detainees being shipped to a maximum security "mega prison" in El Salvador, and only minutes before the show was about to air. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who reported the story, is accusing Weiss of yanking the segment due to "political reasons," because it provided proof that the Trump administration is kidnapping immigrants and shipping them off to a dangerous prison that puts detainees through "months of hell." For her part, Weiss denies there were any shenanigans afoot. "Holding stories that aren't ready for whatever reason-that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices-happens every day in every newsroom," she said in a dismissive tone that sounded very much like a lie. A brief clip of a '60 Minutes' investigation pulled at the last minute by the CBS boss is spreading like wildfire on social media amid fears of Trump-friendly censorship. Democratic lawmakers are threatening Attorney General Pam Bondi with contempt, saying she purposefully omitted key information from Friday's last-second drop of the Epstein files. Claiming the release had too many redactions and missing information, lawmakers say they can invoke the rarely used charge of "inherent contempt" to Bondi for "obstructing legislative functions." Meanwhile, Bondi is claiming the feds are attempting to protect Epstein's victims by leaving out certain information. ummmm. so is that why a photo of Trump appearing alongside the sex offender mysteriously disappeared from Friday's records dump? (Apparently, opinions about who the true "victims" are may vary.). More than a dozen survivors of Jeffrey Epstein are demanding immediate congressional action Monday following the Justice Department's botched release of files on the disgraced financier - a release they said failed to comply with a newly enacted law. The AmericaFest convention, thrown by the late Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA organization, in which deeply shitty Republicans shared their warped visions for the country's future. Though hilariously, instead of torching their opponents on the left, the GOP buttholes spent most of the convention attacking their fellow buttholes, labeling each other "morally bankrupt," "cowards," and in some cases "a cancer." (They ain't wrong!) Disappointingly, former beloved rapper Nicki Minaj took the stage with Kirk's widow to slam California governor Gavin Newsom and incorrectly label Trump as an "amazing role model" as well as being.
