The Bold Eagle

The stance of this little chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) gives the delightful impression of a tiny bird trying its best to imitate an eagle—chest lifted, posture proud, and attitude far larger than its size.

Through the Branches

I really like this image of a northern cardinal and a chipping sparrow. It’s a shame the sparrow decided to look away—probably tracking the cardinal’s arrival. If its head had been turned toward the camera, I might have added it to my gallery. But it is what it is. C’est la vie.

Brown-Hatted Chirper

I’ve got a good stash of chipping sparrow photos (Spizella passerina)—plenty worth sharing every few days or so. This particular one had wandered into my chickadee folder, misfiled but not forgotten.

Grassland Encounter

Charlie and I spent a couple of hours outside yesterday, watching the birds and breathing in the cool air. I was hoping to spot something unusual—one of the odd species that sometimes pass through—but it was just the usual suspects for this time of year.

Still, there was a quiet moment worth noting: a sparrow and a cardinal sharing a patch of ground as they foraged. The cardinal found something—a grub or insect, maybe—and the sparrow turned to look, curious about the find. Not quite companions, but neighbors in the moment.

Sparrow in a Pine Tree

This is a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina), which I suspect has the largest population around here at the moment — though the goldfinches might have them beat. Hard to say for sure. There’s no official count, just what the eyes and ears suggest.

Earth-Toned Watcher

I was hoping to catch sight of a Bachman’s Sparrow or a White-throated Sparrow—both nearby, according to Merlin’s ear. But alas, no luck today.

Instead, this quiet visitor arrived: a Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina)**, the first to grace my lens this season.

More to come.

Good morning. ☕☕☕

31 August 2025

It's the last day of August, fall is around the corner, winter is coming.

For the last couple of years, lovebugs haven’t been all that bad. Knock on wood. They’re still around, just not as thick as in previous seasons. Maybe I’ve stopped noticing—no more daily commute means fewer bug smacks on the grill and windshield.

Still, when they’re swarming, they get into everything. Let’s just say they’re persistently annoying.

Most birds steer clear of them, thanks to their mildly acidic taste. I haven’t tasted one myself—at least not on purpose. I do ride a motorcycle.

From what I’ve read, warblers and chickadees might eat them, which could help a little in the backyard. Here’s hoping they develop a taste for inconvenience.

“Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.” — Douglas Coupland
