Fujian College was short-lived—existing only about 20 years. Its predecessor was the Private Fujian Law and Political Academy (1911), then Fujian University (1925), then Private Fujian College (1929), and dissolved in 1951. This triangular enamel badge (4.5cm per side) is rare and truly a collector's gem. 📜🔺

In today's new #HoPWaG episode we look at the short-lived Qin empire, which unified China to put an end to the Warring States period. Was this Legalist philosophy in action? www.historyofphilosophy.net/qin-dynasty #philsky #china #chinesehistory #philosophy #podcast #legalism
Actually, I would like to know more about Chinese history; I have some brief highlights from a broad upper level class I took on Eastern Asian history about, uh… a long time ago; it covered mostly modern stuff for China, such as Chiang Kai-shek, Mao, Cultural Revolution, etc, as well as some stuff about Japan and a little about Korea. But it was all modern (which, you know, useful! but), a long time ago, and covered multiple nations.

Does anyone know of a good book or series of history books on Asia? I’m mostly interested in pre-modern, in this case, and maybe aimed at something that isn’t designed to be a textbook… mostly because I have plenty of reading to do already and some books, while excellent resources, can be… a bit dry for bedtime reading. My curiosity is currently driven by wanting to know about pre modern China buuuuut recommendations in general are appreciated!

The Passing of Zi Zhen 子真之逝

#HistoricalFiction #ShangDynasty #China c. 1040 BCE
Reign of Di Xin of Shang

#Wss366 Railing #WritersCoffeeClub April 2: Visual presentation

Daji watched from the #railing of the Peacock Terrace. Below, the fire cast a ruddy tint on her fair features. Incense hid the scent of heated bronze.

Below her, Zi Zhen passed
     hands bound
casting an imploring look up at her.

She smiled, reciting:

          Dongting
          Reflection glories
          Humble carp
          In evening dimming
          Gasps not singing [Note 1]

Note 1: The humble man, mistaking passing glory for reality, dies as he was born

Commentary: Daji was the favorite consort of Di Xin of Shang the last Emperor of the Shang dynasty (Reign 1075–1046 BCE). Legend has it that Daji delighted in executions carried out with a pào lào (roasting pillar). The condemned person was forced to embrace a bronze tube filled with coals. Zi Zhen is a fictional character.
