Three years ago, a series of protests in China has sparked a political awakening among Chinese youth, with many questioning Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s authoritarian policies and practices and notably confronting the government’s abuses against Tibetans and Uyghurs.
The latest China Dissent Monitor is out now. It notes a persistent increase in dissent events and an increase in protests related to schools and education.

Hundreds of Chinese communist youths gathered for a huge demonstration at the Mao Zedong Square in the city of Shaoshan, Mao’s birthplace, on the eve of the communist leader’s birthday. With paroles echoing across the square, the protesters condemned the capitalist restoration policies of the ruling Communist Party of China, calling for a return to socialism and collectivization.
