I appreciate the way #digitalinfrared punches through dust and fog
For years I've driven by Chimney Rock in southern Colorado not realizing it was a national monument and the site of the ruins of two kivas.
A short but steep hike takes you to an upper kiva where Chimney and Companion rock are visible. The moon appears here during lunar standstills. The observability of this event every 18.5 years makes it a sacred site.

I just don’t have it in me.' Some businesses in mountain tourist town not coming back after flood

Progress is slow for Chimney Rock, North Carolina, hit hard by Helene

Despite being nearly wiped off the map by the remnants of Hurricane Helene, tiny Chimney Rock Village in North Carolina had optimistically predicted it would be open for business by Memorial Day. But in the days leading up to the holiday, a security guard at the town's entrance still turns away all but locals and construction workers. Mayor Peter O'Leary admits Main Street likely won't reopen until summer sometime. He said nearly a third of businesses were destroyed by last September's flooding. While some are likely gone forever, there are signs of progress. Amish volunteers from Pennsylvania are rebuilding wrecked shops and inns. The state is close to finishing a temporary bridge for Chimney Rock State Park to reopen. O'Leary says the long rebuild will be worth it.

The Vagabond Couple

A neighbor with a cabin in Chimney Rock managed to get in finally in the last couple of days, finally hiking in after trying previously and not making it the whole way. He says the Army has a contingent of people clearing debris out of the streets, and helping business owners remove stock and interiors from the stores along the river.

Huge amounts of material is being moved but as of yet no power company trucks have arrived - this area is too hard-hit for that yet.

He got to their cabin and found it intact, but the road gone. No idea what this will mean for them.

My daughter and I visited the Flowering Bridge at Chimney Rock, North Carolina, a year ago. It is all gone now, and I thought I'd share some of that with y'all. It was a really lovely day.
