The warm weather convinced the chillies to grow but this year it’s sloooow 🌱... and only 17 out of 30 seeds have sprouted so far.

Speaking of chilli, I had to rescue a bunch of small ripe habaneros and aji umba(?) from the birds, so I removed the seed bundles and placentas to reduce the heat and sliced them up for last night's chicken pilaf. Was very tasty.

Figbird update: they've been snipping off the top half to two-thirds of ripe African birds eye chillies, and today I find they've started on the jalapeños, the buggers.
I've just collected a bunch of undersized green jalapeños for tonight's pilaf of leftover roast lamb. The buggers won't get those ones now. I mainly collect green birds eyes for my lunch soups, so mostly safe there.
It seems to be opportunistic. They're actually hanging around in the cherry guava tree, waiting for its fruit to ripen. The chillies are in front, and have handy wooden stakes to hang onto while they clip leaves and fruit within easy access. Have not touched the habanero or cayenne fruit yet.

This year my seeds are clearly on strike. So far, only three brave souls showed up — two Buschpfeffer and one Lemon Drop. The rest are still hibernating.
Apparently 17°C in the living room felt like the Arctic, so I moved them to a “tropical” 19°C. Let’s see if that convinces them it’s time to grow. 🌱

Four more #chilli germinations overnight!
I picked through the chilli seeds at bedtime last night and decided to go all-in on another 14 varieties... absolutely not sticking to my guns on limiting them lol... so if all germinate that'll be 28 this year. But the plan for some of them is to be medium-size-pot only and on benches and maybe rotated through desk space at work. We shall see if I can ever manage to be anywhere near that organised though. Unlikely.
Right that's 4.2kg of "long red" chillis in brine for fermenting over the next few weeks. Following Andy's recipe which worked well last year.

* UFO: Using 3-year-old seeds (fingers crossed!)
