Après les haikus, on va maintenant remonter à la poésie classique japonaise, bien moins connue chez nous. On va voir ses origines, sa place à la cour impériale et ses différentes formes, notamment le tanka.
Going through my anime music, I was reminded that I watched the first episode of Chihayafuru almost 14 years ago and that it has been 5 damn years without any new episodes 😭
The first episode of ちはやふる－めぐり－ (Chihayafuru: Full Circle) is now on Netflix. Based on the manga, but an original story set 10 years later in the present (you can tell by the references to AI 😊).
I just love the idea of カルタ (karuta, a card game), especially Uta-garuta (歌ガルタ, "poetry karuta"), which is what they play here. The cards contain the last lines from waka poems from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (小倉百人一首), and while one person reads the whole poem, the other people have to find and flick the card that contains the final lines of that poem.
It's such a weird combination of the beauty of these ancient poems, and the quite violent way at which the cards are flicked across the floor at high speed.
And it's actually a competitive sport, hence the setting of this series in a High School Karuta club.
