#ChatControl: Good and Bad news.

Before that:

- Chat Control 1.0 allows platforms to scan your messages, but they don't have to implement that. Encrypted messages remain encrypted.
- Chat Control 2.0 requires platforms to scan your messages and they need to find ways to break your encrypted messaged.

Good news: Yesterday, Chat Control 2.0 was not accepted. 🙌 But it's only postponed, we haven't heard the end of it … 😒

Bad news: THIS WEEK the EU wants to re-activate the zombie Chat Control 1.0 that was already killed in March, three months ago. 🤬 They really want to rush it through, while everyone is occupied with the soccer world cup. And in March it was extremely close, just one vote less and we'd have lost the vote.

The most disgusting part: It's being rushed through by EVP, the fascists that were seen two weeks ago or so in the EU parliament, chanting "Send them back!" after they voted for even crueler asylum laws.

Na semana passada, a Presidente do Parlamento Europeu pediu ao Conselho da UE para voltar a trabalhar na exceção à Diretiva da Privacidade, pelo que é provável que a proposta rejeitada em março volte a ser votada no Plenário do PE em breve.

The fight is still ongoing in the EU, and the most insidious area - Chat Control - still has a chance to be stopped.

One thing worth remembering in the #ChatControl fight: fundamentally, privacy is and always was a political problem first, and only secondarily a technological problem. The only way to kill mass surveillance is to win the political battle.

If the current bullshit proposal goes through, though, the next step is a court challenge, which has a good chance of success. No bad decision is ever final.
