Treated myself to a little gaslight tonight, with the film that gave the manipulative behavior its name.
Gaslight (1944) Official Trailer - Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman Movie HD

I was a little startled at how transparent the script was. The mystery was no mystery at all; the course of each plot element was clearly charted out from the moment it was introduced. Maybe it’s my generation’s overfamiliarity with the tropes, or maybe the direction of the film was always intended to be obvious, but it still felt like a weak point.
But any weakness in the story was more than balanced by the strength of the leads’ performances. Bergman’s hysteria is very measured, rising gradually and never quite reaching crescendo before slumping into numb acceptance. Charles Boyer inhabits stone-faced cruelty like no one I’ve ever seen. Joseph Cotton guest stars as Joseph Cotton, and Angela Lansbury is startlingly young.
In all a very satisfying experience. Highly recommend.
