Apparently 40 years ago today in 1985 I saw #RedHotChiliPeppers & #Channel3 open up for X in concert. This all sounds like a real punk-y affair, but actually it was pretty tame, given a) it was on the back of X's worst & most over-produced LP "Ain't Love Grand!", and b) it was at Irvine Meadows in Orange County, the sensible arena of choice for lots of 2nd-tier major label acts (Alan Parsons Project played there a lot).
At that point the Peppers had Hillel Slovak on gtr and were milking their novelty college radio hit "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes." But I do remember it being louder and more aggro than anything I'd seen live up to that point. X? All I really remember was John Doe kicking hard at some manic stage dancer to push him the hell off the stage. Openers Channel 3, then deep into their big-hair “Last Night I Drank…” phase, got me wondering if all my punk heroes were turning glam-metal . . . but that’s a different story.
