Recenti ricerche hanno rivelato l’esistenza di colonie di avvoltoi di Rüppell, una specie critica in via di estinzione, visibili tramite immagini satellitari. Un team di scienziati ha analizzato oltre 6 milioni di chilometri quadrati in sette paesi dell’Africa orientale e centrale, per identificare i caratteristici segni bianchi lasciati dagli escrementi degli uccelli sotto i loro nidi. Questo studio ha portato alla scoperta di 232 potenziali siti di nidificazione, principalmente situati in Sudan, Sud Sudan e Ciad.
Questa specie ha subito un calo di oltre il 90% negli ultimi quarant’anni. Conoscere esattamente dove nidificano gli avvoltoi di Rüppell può aiutare i conservazionisti a mettere in atto misure protettive. Tuttavia, trovare le colonie rimanenti di questi uccelli in un’area così vasta rappresenta una sfida enorme.

Satellite Detection of Rüppell's Vulture Colonies
Recent research has revealed the existence of Rüppell's vulture colonies, a critically endangered species, visible through satellite imagery. A team of scientists analyzed over 6 million square kilometers in seven countries of Eastern and Central Africa, to identify the characteristic white markings left by the birds’ droppings beneath their nests. This study led to the discovery of 232 potential nesting sites, primarily located in Sudan, South Sudan and Chad.
This species has experienced a decline of over 90% in the last forty years. Knowing exactly where Rüppell's vultures nest can help conservationists implement protective measures. However, finding the remaining colonies of these birds in such a vast area presents a huge challenge.
