The greater #celandine #Chelidonium #majus (#Papaveraceae) is native to Eurasia and is sometimes treated as a weed. However, it possesses significant #pharmaceutical properties due to the #alkaloids it contains, making it of interest for basic research. Consequently, T.E. Samatadze et al. (2020) have #characterized it #agromorphologically, #microanatomically, and molecular-#cytogenetically.

The greater #celandine (#Chelidonium #majus) prefers #nitrogenrich #soils and tends to be #thermophilic. In Germany, it grows in #parks and along roadsides. #Seeddispersal occurs via #myrmecochory; #ants are #attracted by means of a #lure (an #elaiosome). In the case of C. majus, this takes the form of a fleshy outgrowth (a #caruncle).

Lesser #celandine

This cheerful little yellow flower can be found on path edges and woodland floors in early spring. It’s a perennial herb in the buttercup family, with glossy, dark-green, heart-shaped leaves. Often growing in damp areas such as the banks of streams and ditches, it flowers between January and April and is an important source of nectar for queen bumblebees and other early pollinators coming out of hibernation.

William Wordsworth loved them and wrote three poems about them: To the Small Celandine, To the Same Flower, and The Small Celandine. When he died it was proposed that a celandine be carved on his memorial plaque inside St Oswald's Church, Grasmere, but the flower carved thereon is actually a greater celandine.

10 facts about celandines.
