Cattle And Cane, plus other classics
English indie folk outfit Cattle & Cane are back tomorrow with a new LP, Golden. Siblings and bandmates Joe and Helen Hammill debuted with their 2015 album Home, and since have cultivated a gentle and approachable style of folk pop, full of warm arrangements and carefully crafted harmonies.
Joke in Brisbane for while was local TV station, 7 I think, used. "Streets of Your Town" as their station ID filler. Bright, cheerful, earworm. Then someone twigged to the darker lyrics of battered wives...
But for me, it's "#CattleAndCane"
Going home from boarding school, the Sunlander, the rain of falling cinders, all so real.
It wasnt until my dad died, & I got his watch, it hit me full weight of the line
"His father's watch, he left it i the showers"...
Grants father died early, that's why he was at boarding school, going home to Nth Qld on the SUNLANDER through the cane fields.
Either the imagination it took, or drawing from painful experience, I reckon its one of the greatest lines ever, Dylan would be proud.
Onya Grant, RIP at 48.
