Spun Glass Slug Moth caterpillar ( (Isochaetes beutenmuelleri) is a near-transparent larva native to North America, known for its translucent body covered in fluid-filled, glass-like stinging spines. It is also a rarely seen larva. The "glass" spines are deciduous, meaning they fall off at the slightest disturbance to confuse or deter predators.

so I was waiting in the shade outside my classroom building when I noticed this little green caterpillar dangling on a long thread of silk, wriggling, maybe getting ready to pupate. I wanted to get his photo, but he kept being blurry.

Suddenly a vermillion flycatcher swooped in and clacked him right out of the sky and flew off w/o missing a beat.

RIP, caterpillar.

the collared lizard on the next tree over saw everything.

#FotoVorschlag “Naturnah // Close to Nature” I don’t think there’s a better Vorschlag for macro than this. Yesterday it rained quite a bit and I thought it was a good time to go around looking for insects.

Here we have a Caterpillar that has perfect orbs of water caught in its hair. These guys remind me of shaggy dogs because it’s really hard to see their face for all the fur.

Today’s update. Our statice are now about to host some cocoons. But the reducing supply of leaves on the swan plants seem to have convinced some of the larger caterpillars to do the right thing. And some caterpillars from our decoy plants have already got the message, 2 new cocoons, and one more happening now.
