Centinaia di persone domenica 3 maggio sono venute a salutare la Global Sumud Flotilla con una manifestazione sul lungomare di Ierapetra, una cittadina di circa 20mila abitanti che si affaccia sulla costa sudorientale dell’isola greca di Creta. Una trentina di barche dirette a Gaza, quelle che non sono state intercettate nell’operazione condotta dalla Marina israeliana nella notte tra il 29 e il 30 aprile, sono alla fonda qui davanti, in attesa di ripartire quando calerà il forte vento da nord che da due giorni complica la navigazione nell’Egeo e in tutto il Mediterraneo centro-orientale. Striscioni in inglese e in greco per la Palestina e contro il genocidio, ma anche per la liberazione di Saif Abukeshek e Thiago Ávila deportati in Israele dopo il sequestro in alto mare. E un corteo che ha percorso il lungomare e alcune strade del centro dopo una serie di interventi di attivisti greci e di volontari imbarcati e degli equipaggi di terra. “Siamo ancora qui e questa è una sconfitta per l’Iof (le Forze di occupazione israeliane, ndr)”, ha detto al microfono Murii, 32 anni, egiziano con passaporto tedesco, ingegnere meccanico che vive a Barcellona dopo 10 anni in Germania dove ha lavorato anche alla Mercedes Benz, imbarcato su Diablo che è una barca di quelle partite il 15 aprile dalla capitale catalana.

Hundreds of people came on Sunday, May 3rd, to greet the Global Sumud Flotilla with a demonstration on the waterfront of Ierapetra, a town of about 20,000 inhabitants overlooking the southeastern coast of the Greek island of Crete. Thirty boats headed to Gaza, those that were not intercepted in the operation conducted by the Israeli Navy during the night between April 29th and 30th, are anchored here, waiting to depart when the strong north wind that has complicated navigation in the Aegean and throughout the central-eastern Mediterranean rises. Banners in English and Greek for Palestine and against genocide, but also for the release of Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila, deported to Israel after being seized at sea. And a procession that walked along the waterfront and some streets of the center after a series of interventions by Greek activists and volunteers aboard and ground crews. “We are still here and this is a defeat for the IOF (Israeli Occupation Forces, ed.)”, said Murii, 32, Egyptian with a German passport, a mechanical engineer who lives in Barcelona after 10 years in Germany where he also worked for Mercedes Benz, aboard Diablo, which is a boat that left on April 15th from the capital of Catalonia.
