Yesterday evening, M. and I watched "Ghatashraddha" (1977) at the Kinodvor cinema in Ljubljana - an old BW arthouse Indian film by Girish Kasaravalli that beautifully captures the fundamental moral, ethical, cultural, and political dilemmas that are to some extent still painfully present in today's Indian society.
Caste is far more visible in villages than in cities. Every time I go back to my village, I can't help but see how, within just a 15-kilometer stretch, there are separate areas where people live according to their caste. It's sad to see such division in a place that should be united.

Himachal News: हिमाचल प्रदेश में प्राकृतिक आपदा ने भारी तबाही मचाई है। मंडी का सराज क्षेत्र सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित है। लोग मदद की गुहार लगा रहे हैं। सरकार, प्रशासन और सामाजिक संगठन राहत कार्यों में जुटे हैं। लाखों रुपये की सहायता और राशन, बिस्तर, बर्तन जैसी जरूरी चीजें भेजी गई हैं। लेकिन एक वायरल वीडियो ने आपदा में जातिवाद के गंभीर आरोप लगाए हैं। क्या राहत सही लोगों तक पहुंच रही है?
वायरल वीडियो में चौंकाने वाला दावा
एक महिला का वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल हो रहा है। वह कहती है कि आपदा के नौवें दिन राशन मिला। उपप्रधान राशन लेकर आया, लेकिन उसे अपनी जाति के लोगों में बांट दिया। महिला और उसके समुदाय को कुछ नहीं मिला। इस वीडियो ने आपदा में जातिवाद के आरोपों को हवा दी है। लोग प्रशासन की कार्यप्रणाली पर सवाल उठा रहे हैं। यह वीडियो चर्चा का केंद्र बना हुआ है।
प्रशासन की लापरवाही उजागर
महिला ने बताया कि उसका गांव आपदाग्रस्त सूची में शामिल नहीं था। मुख्यमंत्री सुखविंदर सिंह सुखु के दौरे के बाद उपायुक्त मंडी ने गांव का दौरा किया। तब जाकर गांव को आपदाग्रस्त घोषित किया गया। इस देरी ने प्रशासन की तैयारियों पर सवाल खड़े किए हैं। प्रभावित लोग कहते हैं कि आपदा में जातिवाद और लापरवाही के कारण जरूरतमंदों तक राहत नहीं पहुंच रही है।
