The Berliner Fernsehturm, built from 1965 to 1969, was built for practical and propaganda reasons. Because the former GDR was not recognized by many countries, the GDR was only allocated limited frequency waves for television broadcasts in 1952. Within this frequency range, it was not possible to provide interference-free television broadcasts in the Berlin urban area with small channels. This required a powerful transmitter at a high position. After preparations to build the television tower in Friedrichshain, the construction project was halted in 1962 due to budget cuts. After research, Friedrichshain turned out to be the ideal location for the television tower. This research also highlighted the prestige aspect of such a tall structure. That is why on September 22, 1964 the government of the GDR, led by Walter Ulbricht, decided to build the television tower next to Alexanderplatz station.
The spherical shape of the top of the tower was chosen because the tower has the same recognizable shape from all sides. The architecture of the Berliner Fernsehturm is inspired by the Sputnik satellite of the former Soviet Union. The simple basic shape was an easily recognizable symbol for the GDR and, after the fall of the wall, the entire city of Berlin. The ohoh.store and many artists who represent the ohoh.store love the Berliner Fernsehturm and can no longer live without it and its space design forms. The Fernsehturm will likely be the first building to safely land on Mars and return to Earth.
