Nepenthes (orbiculata x rafflesiana) x ventricosa “red,” HC C.
Of the three clones I have this one might be the slowest, but it also definitely stands out. Pitchers start out flushed with bright pink between the stripes and blotches, while with age they become this rich overall maroon seen here.

The natural distribution of #Utricularia livida is a bit perplexing. It includes tropical and Southern Africa, Madagascar, and Mexico. In Peter Taylor’s monograph, he states, “This distribution is, of course, of very great interest and I have failed to discover any other plant species with a similar range” (Taylor, 1989).

The first brand new butterwort flower that I’ve had in a very long time…Pinguicula heterophylla x moranensis ‘Huahuapan’ HC B! Why clone B is blooming first when clone A is the bigger one, but nice to see the bloom confirm the expected appearance of this cross. Flowers are fairly large relative to the plant, with nice soft but still rich purple hues. With any luck after the repotting that’s coming up I’ll get this propagating quickly.

#Nepenthes clipeata is a critically endangered species of tropical pitcher plant, characterized by peltate leaves. In mature specimens, the tendril, which joins the pitcher to the rest of the plant, is attached to the underside of the lamina, rather than at its apex.

#Pinguicula macrophylla flowered! This #butterwort produces a very tight winter rosette, however, the summer leaves are comparatively expansive (35-175 mm long and 25-70 mm wide; Lampard et al., 2016). I managed a couple photos of the glandular hairs, too! #CarnivorousPlant
Three exciting developments representing success after a great deal of struggle:
Nepenthes mirabilis echinostoma. I’ve killed 3 of them already, but for some reason this one hung on, and just in the past couple weeks it’s suddenly jumped in size and started making traps with that characteristic wildly flared and ribbed peristome. This is supposed to be a dark clone, so hopefully the color fills in as it ages.
Nepenthes treubiana Andamata is also gaining size, though it has been fairly steadily for a while. Its characteristic bronze color is only just showing now however and should get ever stronger as time goes by. Fingers crossed that this Papuan giant also reaches the huge proportions it should too.
And, N. neoguineensis is also finally showing color and gaining size after having been a struggling little strip of leaf for so long. Leaves are flushing red and the pitchers showing some purple.
With any luck, all three of these will continue to grow over winter in their warm corner, and next year actually be large enough to make feature videos on.

#Pinguicula gigantea is a large #butterwort species that traps small flies in sticky mucilage, like fly paper. It is easy to maintain, but it requires R.O. or distilled water. As an added benefit (for insect control), this species is homophyllous; it retains its sticky leaves year round. #CarnivorousPlant

I had my final #Weretober prompt marked as "Surprise" because a) I had a really weird idea, and b) I wasn't sure I could pull it off. 😅

But I'm happy with how she turned out - meet the were-sundew!

FINALLY, I caught a bloom open: Drosera spatulata ‘Tamlin’ x ultramafica.
A true spat x ultra cross, unlike the commonly traded plants that are just a large spatulata. These guys possess the stiffer, longer petioles and slightly more pronounced stipules, as well as slightly larger flower profile, of ultramafica, as well as the more leaf-happy growth habit and flatter profile of spatulata. And confirming my suspicions because none of the spent flowers before this one are even remotely filling up: the actual hybrid is sterile.
