An early Christmas present from my partner just arrived. Serracenia rubra ssp alabamensis, aka the cane-brake pitcher plant, is endemic to just a couple counties in central Alabama.

I've done a bit of field work within its range but never saw one. When California Carnivores put some young sprouts up for sale I had to get one.

My zigzag bladderworts have started to bloom. While taking photos I discovered that traps have grown out the bottom of the pot.

Waxlip orchid ((Glossodia / Caladenia major) with sundew (Drosera sp. - probably D. auriculata) near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC.

Lots of both sundews and orchids out here in coastal heathland heading into spring - but hot/dry weather since then has seen both suffer a bit in recent weeks.

Caladenia catenata (White Fingers) flowering amongst tall sundews near Gipsy Point, VIC. Large numbers of these sundews (I'm presuming Drosera auriculata) occur here in both open forest and heathland - often alongside various spring orchid species.

Interesting small sundew (Drosera sp.) out in heathland near Genoa, VIC on the last orchid scout.

Red basal rosette and compact size suggest that it might be D. peltata (as it is now described in Victoria) which is not that common in East Gippsland. Most other taller Drosera out in large numbers between Genoa and Mallacoota probably look more like D. auriculata - although hard to tell for certain without seeing flowers and seeds on both forms.

The largest of my baby Sarracenia leucophylla now have 3 pitchers! It's been ~3 months since they finished stratifying and were planted.

My Utricularia subulata (zigzag bladderworts) finally arrived.

A floating aquatic carnivorous plant. Likely common bladderwort (Utricularia macrohiza) from a giant vernal pool in Lake county, California. It traps insects in the bladders, sucking tiny insects in and shutting a trap door behind them. The flowers are yellow and not present at this stage. #Flowers #carniverousplants

A month old pitcher plant sprout. That thing in the middle is a teeny tiny pitcher.

Look what arrived today, my first Sarracenias! S. flava and S. leucophylla are both Alabama natives. Hopefully in a few years we can start selling Sarracenia but I've got a lot to learn before that happens.
